At three years old I knew for sure what I wanted to be in life: Superman. Five days in a Superman outfit and multiple missions to save the world later, it wasn’t working out. I am Matt Phinney, striking coach to a number of great fighters such as UFC Veteran Jorge Rivera and WEC vet Mike Campbell, and current Strikeforce Middleweight Phenom Tim Kennedy. I train and corner fighters competing at all levels, from the UFC and WEC all the way to local smoker events. I’ve been at it for six years and I will train anyone, so long as they have the desire to learn! While I wasn’t out saving the world I was training hard and have been involved in mixed martial arts for over twelve years. In 2008, I competed in the Lowell Golden Gloves, broke my hand in the first fight but went on to win the next four fights and attain the Jr. Middleweight title. Later that year I fought in the New England Boxing Tournament and won the title against two game opponents. 2010 saw my second appearance in the Golden Gloves. I fought four times winning three fights by TKO/ KO to win the Golden Gloves Jr. Middleweight title once again. My record holds at 11-0 with three Amateur titles. I’m also a pajama jockey and have earned a blue belt under Machado Black Belt Tim Burrill,a.k.a. “Panda.” And once upon a time, a long time ago, I wrestled at the national level and placed 5th in the New England tournament.
I was born in Boston, MA but I don’t hold it against anyone if they were not.
I box, train MMA, and put myself through excrutiating tests of fitness, fulltime. This is what I love and what I plan to do forever. There is nothing I love more than sharing what I’ve learned with great people who desire to improve and succeed. I hope to work with you!
